All silk used by The Ethical Silk Company is Ahimsa peace silk, a 100% eco-friendly mulberry silk, supplied by Ahimsa Silks.

Unlike in regular silk production, where the silk worms are boiled alive to extract the silk, our animal-friendly production is carried out after the silk worm has completed it's metamorphosis into a moth, and leaves the cocoon. Each cocoon is individually checked before the silk thread is spun.

This specialized production is more laborious but the result is a beautifully soft silk, like a fine linen, with a 'pearl like' sheen rather than the shiny finish that is typical of traditional, non-animal friendly silk. It has a momme weight of 20.

This process of silk production ensures there is no killing, no cruelty, and the quality of the silk is totally protected.

As a breathable fabric and natural temperature regulator, silk helps retain heat in cold weather and excess heat is expelled in warm weather. Therefore your body maintains a natural, comfortable temperature.

Silk is the strongest of natural fibers. It contains natural protein and 18 essential amino acids including cellular albumen which helps speeds up cell metabolism. Unlike cotton, it does not draw moisture away from your skin & hair and with it's extremely smooth and soft texture, silk proves beneficial for those with sensitive skin (eg. Eczema)

Silk is hypoallergenic, it does not attract dust mites and is naturally fire retardant. As it does not conduct static electricity, silk helps reduce hair breakage while helping the hair to maintain proper moisture balance.
